Intro

Hardly any other epoch in art history saw such sweeping changes as the late Gothic era in the 15th century.

The advent of the printing press made it possible to distribute images and text on a previously inconceivable scale. Artists such as Niclaus Gerhaert von Leyden or Martin Schongauer gained widespread fame and came to influence the evolution of the arts right across Europe. The innovations that emerged during this era have continued to shape our understanding of art and images to this day.

Late Gothic: The Birth of Modernity is the first comprehensive exhibition to focus on the long transitional phase between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in the German-speaking world. Focusing on the dialogue between painting, sculpture, printmaking and handicraft, it showcases the full diversity of the art of this epoch.
